Description

The ECLA Postdoctoral Fellowships are teaching fellowships that allow outstanding academics in the early stages of their careers to develop as teachers in an academic environment where teaching matters. During their two years at ECLA, Fellows will teach both within their area of expertise and beyond: ECLA's core courses – dedicated to 'value studies' - provide an opportunity to engage with topics and texts that have a claim on us regardless of our specialty, and an opportunity to co-teach with academics from other backgrounds or disciplines.

Postdoctoral Fellows are encouraged to continue their research while at ECLA and for that reason one term each year is kept free of teaching. Fellows are expected, however, to participate in faculty seminars, teaching development and in a busy college life even during terms where they do not teach. For this reason the Fellowship is residential; accommodation on campus and meals in the cafeteria are provided as a part of the stipend. 

Eligibility

Applicants must have received or expect to receive a PhD between January 2008 and December 2011. Excellent English is necessary, and ideally applicants will have done their graduate work in English. Teaching experience is an advantage. Applicants from all disciplines are considered as long as they have a documented interest in the study of values and a capacity to teach beyond their field of expertise in ECLA’s core courses. In our current search special attention will be given to applicants with a PhD in ethics, economics, psychology, sociology, or the history and philosophy of science.

Terms of the Fellowship

Fellowships are awarded to one or two applicants for a two year period to begin August 1, 2010. The stipend includes 29.000 Euros per year, accommodation on campus and meals. Fellows are expected to teach in four out of the six terms available, and to attend classes during one. The Fellow is expected to be in residence during term, also when not teaching.
