ECLA was established in Germany in 2002 as a not-for-profit educational institution (gGmbH). ECLA is also recognized in the United States as a 501 (c) (3) not-for-profit educational institution. In February 2011, ECLA received state recognition as a private university from the Senatsverwaltung für Bildung, Wissenschaft und Forschung (Senate Administration for Education, Science and Research) in Berlin. In 2012 ECLA merged with Bard College, NY and was renamed to ECLA of Bard.

ECLA of Bard, a Liberal Arts University in Berlin admits students of any race, colour, national origin, ethnic origin, sex, gender identity, religion, sexual orientation, and age to all the rights, privileges, programmes, and activities generally accorded or made available to students at the college.
It does not discriminate on the basis of race, colour, national origin, ethnic origin, sex, gender identity, religion, sexual orientation, and age in administration of its educational policies, admission policies, scholarship and loan programmes, and athletic and other school-administered programmes.
